Mindful Self Care for Medical Professionals

“Self care is never a selfish act – it is simply good stewardship of the only gift I have – the gift I was put on earth to offer others. Any time we can listen to true self, and give it the care it requires, we do so not only for ourselves, but for the many others whose lives we touch.”
– Parker Palmer, Let Your Life Speak

In the current medical environment, we can easily get stressed. There’s the challenge of adapting to electronic medical records, new compensation and practice structures, changes in relationships with staff and administrators, patient phone calls, and other challenges to meet. We have more to do and less time for our patients and our own lives. And sometimes we feel burned out and find it hard to give patients our best.
Taking care of ourselves is a priority if we’re going to take care of others. Part of doing that means being present to our work in ways that we can sustain for the long term. It's about learning to see and listen to our patients - and to our own needs - in a mindful and caring way that both improves our clinical work and enhances our personal quality of life. Mindful Self-Care will help you develop your own multidimensional way of handling the stressful challenges of medical practice. It will also help you renew your perspective on the care of patients and the reasons you've chosen such a challenging but rewarding profession. You will also learn a practice of mindful self-care that can help you bring your best self to your work and your life. |
As a clinical health psychologist who has worked primarily in cardiology, I have taught classes in meditation and mindful practice for many years to medical patients. I have also helped physicians, nurses and other medical professionals adopt these practices to benefit their personal lives and work.
